Two miles down the road, Swinhope Moor rises up behind Daddry Shield and is where Weardale Ski Club is based. The club was started in 1963 and is run by 14 volunteers. These include a fireman who works at the club in his spare time, and a retired mechanic. They're up there in the summer cutting the rushes, and in the winter manning the two button lifts and the piste basher. There are seven pisted runs, off-piste slopes and a gully with jumps and ledges. The club has also been awarded the 'Recreational Club of the Year Award 2010' by Snow Sport England and was even featured on BBC Ski Sunday last winter when the conditions outshone those in the Alps. You can't get much better than that on your doorstep!
Check out www.skiweardale.com for live webcam shots of the snow conditions, great photos and detailed directions for accessing the slopes which are pretty tricky without a 4x4 or snow tyres. You can also call 01388 527527 for recorded opening times and other useful information.
There are plenty of great hills for toboganning within easy walking distance of the house, and there are two toboggans that you can borrow, but no ski or snowboard gear. There are no hiring facilities at the club but there are links below to the nearest equipment shops. Go Take A Hike is in Stanhope, only 10 mins drive from the house.
